On today’s edition of Revive a Sunnah, I’ll be writing about sneezing, what to say when you sneeze, what to say to a person who sneezes beside you and how the sneezer responds.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the most Merciful
When you sneeze, you should say
All praise is to Allah
When a person sneezes beside you and says Alhamdulillah, you should say
May Allah have mercy upon you
The sneezer should then respond saying
Yahdeekumul-laahu wa yuslihu baalakum
May Allah guide you, and set your affairs in order
Some related Hadith
The Prophet (may peace be upon him) ordered us to do seven (things) and forbade us from seven (other things): He ordered us to pay a visit to the sick, to follow funeral possessions, to say: May Allah be merciful to you to a sneezer, -if he says: Praise be to Allah, to accept invitation (invitation to a wedding banquet), to return greetings, to help the oppressed, and to help others to fulfill their oaths (provided it was not sinful). And he forbade us from seven (things): to wear golden rings or golden bangles, to wear silk (cloth), Dibaj, Sundus and Mayathir.
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Two men sneezed before The Prophet (may peace be upon him). The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said to one of them, “May Allah bestow His Mercy on you,” but he did not say that to the other. On being asked (why), The Prophet (may peace be upon him) said, “That one praised Allah (at the time of sneezing), while the other did not praise Allah.”

Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Jews used to intentionally sneeze in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) hoping that he would say to them: `Yarhamukum-ullah (may Allah have mercy on you),’ but he would respond with: “Yahdikum-ullahu wa yuslihu balakum (may Allah guide you and render sound your state of affairs).”

Peace be with you…
