Assalam alaykum, I hope you’ve been well! The religion of Islam is a beautiful one which teaches us how to go about our lives without leaving out any details, so on today’s edition of Revive a Sunnah I’m going to be writing about the etiquette of dressing, what to say before dressing or undressing, upon wearing  new clothes, which side to begin with and what to say to someone wearing new clothes.
When wearing a garment say

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee kasaanee haathaa (aththawba) wa razaqaneehi min ghayri hawlim-minnee wa laa quwwatin.
Praise is to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, though I was powerless myself and incapable

Before undressing say

In the Name of Allah.

When wearing a new garment say

Allaahumma lakal-hamdu ‘Anta kasawtaneehi, ‘as’aluka min khayrihi wa khayri maa suni’a lahu, wa ‘a’oothu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni’a lahu.
O Allah, praise is to You. You have clothed me. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it has been made for, and I seek Your protection from the evil of it and the evil of what it has been made for.

To someone wearing a new garment say
Next time you see someone on a new garment, don’t just tell them how lovely it looks, but also pray for them saying:

Tublee wa yukhliful-laahu ta’aalaa.
May Allah replace it when it is worn out.

The Prophet (SAW) encouraged wearing white clothes, to begin dressing from the right, undressing from the left and prohibited the use of Silk (male only) and Leopard skin.

I hope that you’ve learned something new today, until next week (in sha Allah) Revive a Sunnah

Peace be with you…
