Sleep Etiquette

As Salam Alaykum Warahmotullah Wabarakatuh
It’s another jum’ah (alhamdulillah)
On today’s edition of Revive a Sunnah, I’ll be writing about the etiquette of sleep, that is; what to say before sleeping and upon rising.
I won’t be quoting all the hadith involved but I’ll sure mention the most important ones.

Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim
It is very important for us to know (and also make it a habit) what to say before sleeping because of this saying of the Prophet (SAW)

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Whoever sits in a place where he does not remember Allah (SWT), he will suffer loss and incur displeasure of Allah; and whoever lies down (to sleep) in a place where he does not remember Allah, he will suffer sorrow and incur displeasure of Allah.”
[Abu Dawud].

The commonest and easiest of all the duas said at the time of sleep and upon waking up was gotten from this hadith

Hudhaifah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Whenever the Prophet (PBUH) lay down for sleep at night, he would place his (right) hand under his (right) cheek and supplicate: “Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya [O Allah, with Your Name will I die and live (wake up)].” And when he woke up, he would supplicate: “Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba`da ma amatana, wa ilaihin-nushur (All praise is due to Allah, Who has brought us back to life after He has caused us to die, and to Him is the return).”
[Al-Bukhari].

But of course there are a lot more duas that can be said at the time of sleep all of which can be found in the ‘citadel of the believer’

To-do Before Bed
* Perform wudu
* Dust off the bed mentioning Allah’s name
* Lie down saying Bismillah
* Sleep on right side
* Place right hand under right cheek

Let’s all try to learn all the duas to be said before sleeping and cultivate the habit of reciting them, may Allah make this easy for us (Amin)
Till next Friday (in sha Allah) – Revive a Sunnah

Peace be with you…
